Twelve mil is fine for a bedroom or a low-traffic room. Twenty mil is what stands up to dogs, children and an entry hall. A thick plank with a thin wear layer feels substantial in the hand and scratches within a year, which is the complaint that follows almost every cheap LVP quote.
Core construction is the second decision. Rigid SPC handles an imperfect subfloor better than flexible WPC, and that matters more than people expect, because very few subfloors are genuinely flat.
